Melody of the hymn is by the musician monk Matthäus Greiter, around 1524, and appears in the Strassburg hymnals of 1525 and 1526 titled "Beati immaculati. Psalm 119". Sebald Heyden writes "O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde Groß", a 23 stanza (!) passion hymn for the same melody, in 1530. The text for the Genevan Psalm tune (which adapts the same Strassburg melody for Psalm 36 (1539) and Psalm 68/67(1562)) is martial in nature, which is reflected in the composition. The opening line of the Hymn, which is treated here in dense counterpoint, is also used in "Laßt uns erfreuen" (A Hymn of Glory let us Sing): this prelude can also be used for this hymn. The multiple overlapping and ascending grand stretti make this short fugal chorale prelude, with the final entry of the cantus firmus in augmentation on the IV scale degree rising to the tonic particularly fitting in organo pleno for Ascension Day.
