In this piece the piano is given an extreme of emotions to display. A lively waltz and a sorrowful middle sections are straddled by a powerful start and finish. The pedal should be used throughout the piece to given strength and resonance to the music. The expection is the middle section, where the lack of pedal should contrast to give a more empty sound. The performer should re-apply the sustain to give extra contrast when begining the final section.
