Pauline Garcia Viardot's Sérénade is a piquant Spanish dance imbued with Flamenco rhythms and Andalusian cadences. Although she was a French composer, singer, and teacher born in Paris, Viardot's Spanish heritage lends the piece a special authenticity. Sérénade was originally conceived as a virtuosic showpiece for piano. This version for an advanced woodwind quintet retains just enough bravura to make it exciting for players and audiences. But above all, it's a hauntingly melodic and colorful souvenir of a time when French composers and their audiences were infatuated with all things Spanish.
