'Silent Night' was originally written with a very simply-harmonised guitar accompaniment, which was no doubt very effective at its first performance in 1818. Most hymnbook harmonisations are also very simple, sometimes using as few as three different chords, but when played on the organ they can sound a bit dull to a 21st century ear. This SATB arrangement is intended for congregational use as well as choir performance, and aims to introduce just a little more harmonic interest without compromising the carol's innocent simplicity.
