The title is taken from the history of the Stevenage area. In the Dark Ages Later Saxon settlers lived at a safe distance from the Roman Great North Road, in a few huts around the area where St Nicholas parish church now stands. Their village was in a clearing in the woods and was called 'Sithenaece' or Strong Oak from which the name Stevenage was later taken. Other woodland settlements sprang up in the areas now known as Chells, Broadwater and Shephall
