The first movement, "Quick and Quirky," is a flirtation with jazz-tinged riffs, both rhythmic and melodic. In the second movement, "Slow and Serious," quiet sorrow alternates with shrill agitation. The concluding movement, "Fast and Frisky," is a madcap tarantella. In all three movements, the composer enjoys exploiting the clarinet's three distinct registers (low, high, and piercingly high), as well as its unparalleled ability to play softly.
