The "Groove-o-matic 3000" is a machine (think steampunk) that utilizes advanced algorithms to collect, analyze, and compose music. Enter a date, and the "Groove-o-matic" will compose a short groove-based piece that is inspired by music composed around the given date.
This three-movement sonata was generated by the "Groove-o-matic 3000." The first movement, 1938, seems to be derived from the style of Bartok’s "Contrasts," written in that same year. Likewise, the second and third movements (1935 and 1918) are related to a historical recording by Benny Goodman of "Body and Soul" and Stravinsky’s "Three Pieces."
This is a challenging work that explores the full range of the clarinet. The first and third movements are full of rhythmic vitality and tonal variety. The middle movement is more contemplative and gives the clarinetist opportunity for an improvised cadenza that utilizes given sets of pitch classes.
