This piece was written in 1983 for the three Bassoonists of the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra at that time - Judith Wood, Valentine Herlund and Derek Vaughan-Heapy. It was a piece written for their school visits. The second movement has a cadenza for each player. I gave them each a hint of a well known melody of their own respective countries - Bsn. 1 'Waltzing Matilda' - Bsn. 2 'Finlandia' and Bsn. 3 'Early one morning'. Unfortunately, I got Valentine's nationality wrong who was not from Finland but was actually from Rumania! Thank goodness I didn't know that for I know no Rumanian folksongs.
