3. La Belle Dame sans Merci
This arrangement is for Voice with Piano. Range in G: B3 – E5. The song is somewhat abridged from the original, and early variations exist, notably the first line ‘Ah, what can ail thee, wretched wight,’ .
This famous poem has previously been set to music, notably by Stanford, and repeatedly illustrated by the Pre-Raphaelite artists. Here we have an approachable but atmospheric setting. The first eight bars of song may be sung by a second voice.
