This quartet was the second to be started but the first to be completed. The first movement is in traditional sonata-allegro form but with the themes reversed in the recapitulation. The scherzo was influenced by Brahms (Sextet No. 1). The slow movement was influenced somewhat by Beethoven and Brahms. The opening harmonies from this finale were taken from Bach's Prelude No. 21 from the Well-Tempered Clavier Book I. The episodes of the rondo were influenced a bit by Brahms. It features a mix of 6/8 and 9/8 bars.
