This is a song to a poem by Thomas Hardy. It describes a walk in the countryside and stopping to listen to a thrush singing. On looking for the bird it is discovered to be a bird, 'frail, gaunt and small" and not in good condition. However the birdsong lightens the evening gloom and the bright singing suggests to the poet that the bird knew something happier than the poet was aware of.
