Written for the 1908 Boston Food Fair, The Fairest of the Fair almost missed its scheduled premier. The Sousa Band's librarian had sorted the music for their appearance and discovered there were no parts as of the night before! The copyist Louis Morris stayed up all night with Sousa's full score and had nearly completed his work when Sousa woke up. Librarian and copyist had to admit what happened but Sousa recognized and rewarded Morris' extraordinary effort by directing him to complete his work (he did) then sleep through the concert.
