Anatoly Liadov (1855-1914) was a major talent of late 19th century Russian romanticism. Unfortunately he was habitually lazy, and his greatest claim to fame is that he made musical history by default. He failed to complete a commission from Diaghilev for the ballet that eventually became 'The Firebird', thus paving the way for Stravinsky's world-wide fame when Diaghilev offered him the commission in Liadov's place. Most of the music he did finish was in the form of small suites and character pieces. Here are three rich and melodic pieces arranged for two pianos. An intimate and melancholy Prelude, a richly decorated Barcarolle, and his most famous piece, the childlike Musical Snuffbox.
