They are dedicated to the composer's three children from her marriage to Albert Domange – Pierre, Jeanne and Edouard. Mel Bonis refers back to the "old style", which was very popular at that time. In the Bourrée, Mel Bonis follows the traditional form in a fast 2/2 beat, which is initiated by a short one-eighth-off-beat. One long and two short notes are the basis of the elegant pavane. The three dances was first conceived as separate piano pieces but was later on orchestrated by the composer. This is an arrangement for nine flutes (from the piccolo to the contrabass flute) based on the original piano score as well as Bonis orchestration and contributes with a delicate addition to the growing repertoire for fute ensembles.
