A family walk up Mt Herbert in Canterbury, New Zealand, provided the imagery for this highly syncopated and catchy hymn. Metaphors from nature create images of God's action in our lives. Salvation is like the mighty Waimakariri River in Canterbury, 'sweeping, souring and making new'. There are some dissonant harmonies, but the music is not too complex for this hymn to be teachable to most congregations. If it is played on the organ, the woodblock part helps the congregation sing the rhythms.
