The Flute Quartet in F (Op. 7, no 1) of the prolific Bohemian composer Johann Baptist Vanhal (or Wanhal) is best known, perhaps, as an oboe quartet, or in its arrangement (with alterations) by Vilem Tausky as a concerto for oboe and strings. The present edition is from the undated MS parts of the ’Quartetto a flauto traverso, Violino, alto violo, e basso’ in F in the Royal Danish Library. I have added dynamics where necessary, tempi, and silently corrected the few obvious scribal errors. It is within the oboe’s rather than the flute’s expected range; nevertheless, flute players and audiences can derive great pleasure from it in this original form
