In this original, domestic, version, the scoring was for 2 x pianos, Oboe , Clarinet, Violin I, Violin II, Viola and Cello. In this newly revised, version for full orchestra - 2 x Flutes, 2 x Oboes, 2 x Clarinets, 2 x Bassoons, 4 x Horns, 2 x Trumpets, Trombone, Timpani, Cymbals, Harp (optional), Piano and Strings – the composer has extended the original with a substantial final section.
Introduction (Westminster chimes) Variation 1: Violins play the main Auld Lang Syne theme Variation 2: featuring a solo cello Variation 3: featuring solo oboe and solo clarinet with reduced strings. Variation 4: alla marcia featuring the timpani Variation 5: featuring the solo clarinet Variation 6: alla Rumba (and Westminster Chimes again) Variation 7: this extended variation begins with a Scottish Jig-like double Fugue, the theme heard in diminution in 6/8 time. This is soon abandoned and varied appearances of the main theme, sometimes accompanied by the jig-like version of the theme, feature the separate orchestral sections. Two Scottish folk tunes briefly appear - Campbeltown Loch and Loch Lomond. Eventually a huge climax arrives, featuring a wild fortissimo tutti of Westminster chimes which is abruptly cut short, and a quiet snippet of Campbeltown Loch fades into the distance, after which the revelries are brought to an end with a huge tutti chord.
