The title of this piece comes from two different Scottish traditions - A waulking (pronounced walking) song is a work song from the Western Isles which uses constant rhythmic variation of a few notes, and Sang is the scots word for song. I quickly wrote this piece as I needed a simple 'folk' melody to use in my music theatre work 'City Rituals' and the piece kind of grew out of this. It is dedicated to two friends who play piano four hands pieces (I have been promising to write them something for years).
