Wells is a delightful hymn tune drawn from one of Bortniansky's sacred works - often set to "Sinners Jesus will receive". There are various versions of the melody and its rhythm, this arrangement is based on the form of the melody in major UK hymn books.

The baritone male singing voice has an important role in Russian sacred music. The most recent BBC production of War and Peace included the scene of a group of orthodox priests walking through the Russian army camp singing a hymn to this tune! I thought it would be appropriate to score it for a quartet of Euphoniums to find a similar intonation to that male voice in the middle of the range. This piece can also be played by Bb baritone horns or trombones, or any combination of these instruments.

The piece has three verses with a different arrangement in each, exploring the possibilities for this combination of brass voices. Verse 1 is hymn-like. There is a more experimental 2nd verse, before a stronger, more joyful verse 3, with diminuendo to a gentle ending.
