This arrangement is a transcription of my 2010 recording of the American folk hymn, "What Wondrous Love Is This." The arrangement can be very effective as either a solo or as congregational accompaniment (with minor alterations). My performance of this arrangement is available on youtube at http://youtu.be/0DlkrSLLhlU, or visit my youtube channel, http://www.youtube.com/dayzzzed, for this and other songs.
This song offers abundant opportunities for you to develop your own interpretation and to experiment with phrasing and dynamics - don’t be afraid to try different approaches to expressing the song!
This haunting melody has an interesting background. While the author is unknown, the tune and lyric pattern are quite similar to the pirate song, "Captain Kidd," from around 1700. Exactly how the tune made it into the American Southern folk tradition is lost to history, but it’s a great example of how a tune can live in many different contexts - don’t be surprised if you hear this melody used at both a Lenten service and a Renaissance faire!
