This newer hymn tune (in comparison to the much older "St. Denio," or "Joanna")is the product of one of my many London walks during my younger years. Hence its inspiration was similar to that of "Park Lane" and "Oxford Street," which are the march and trio themes of "Day of Peace and Gladness," which also is at this site. As in the case of most of my hymn settings, the music came to me mostly all at once. In this instance, by the time I returned to the hostel where I was staying, the melody and harmony were completely in place mentally, and I settled on the text not long afterward.

I fashioned this string orchestral arrangement in 2008 either to accompany performances of the hymn (with a full strophe as introduction prior to commencement of singing) or to be played independently as a processional, recessional, offertory, or other ceremonial piece. It should be done with a rather large string orchestra, since both the first and second violin parts divide on the final strophe. Also, more than the usual complement of violas should be employed since they get the melody on the third sung strophe. I classify this arrangement as moderately difficult since both violin parts involve playing above first position with clean articulation for more than a note or two at a time in some spots toward the end.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
