Brighten the Spark (congregational version)

Writing a contemporary hymn of praise in the new millennium presents all sorts of difficulties. Many modern hymns seem to have overlooked the complexities of belief in their effort to present simple, easily digestible music and lyrics. On the other hand, our legacy of 18th and 19th century hymns and their sometimes turgid verses appear increasingly irrelevant. At their very best, however, hymns can raise the spirits and send a powerful message of being part of an infinite community. Witness the many occasions where “Abide with Me” and “Jerusalem” find an audience.

Having set myself such standards, this piece attempts to reconcile a number of requirements. The melody had to be singable by an average choir and easily remembered by a congregation. The organ accompaniment is intentionally straightforward, even if it does occasionally wander into some exotic keys. I have tried to give the lyrics a directness and meaning that speaks not only to believers but also to those who might be seeking a faith they can live by.

Brighten the spark that you lit, Lord, So many years ago. Feed the hunger that you gave me, To the depths of my heart and my soul. I have so little I can offer To the God who created me - Give me the grace and the time, Lord, To learn to follow Thee.

Lighten the dark that surrounds me In this world of fear and strife. Quench the thirst that dries all my spirit With the water of eternal life. Guide my steps so they each may find you - The God who still waits for me. Give me the strength and the faith, Lord, To love and honour Thee.
