This study attempts to capture the mixture of simplicity and complex emotions seen in so many works by L S Lowry - from the limited palette of white, black, grey and brown to the sense of crowded, random, oppressive movement. These elements are usually set against a townscape dominated by mist, smoke and rain. The narrow harmonic bounds marked out in the first few bars define the opening mood but changes with the rapid middle section where the blurred cross-rhythms picture people and their shadows scurrying through rain-swept streets. The study returns to its stark opening before a brief gust from a final arpeggio. The choice of an electric piano sound is one of personal preference - the piece also works well on an acoustic piano.
