Commentary by Left Brain vs. Right Brain. RB: "This piece is written in 2 flats, and don't tell me you were thrown out of both of them. What kind of title is Nocturne ? la Mode Dorienne? Lefty, you got some 'splaining to do!" LB: The key seems to be B-Flat Major, but is actually C in Dorian Mode, with hints of F in Mixolydian Mode. This music also explores 3rds, 5ths, 7ths, 9ths etc., and sometimes accretes layers of these intervals." RB: "Timewise, this is an Andante in 9/8 meter, but for fun I threw in duple, triple, quadruple, nonuple and even some 15/8 meter. The Development careens into 3 flats, and is as loaded with accidentals as the Exposition wasn't." LB: "Your predilection for unusual tone colors is also apparent, for example the brief duet for tuba and harp." RB: "There was another nifty influence: I saw a Marx Brothers film festival, and found that Harpo Marx made 2 LPs in 1957. He played the harp like an angel." LB: "Speaking of influences, recently I translated a French technical manual into English. Even engineering terms sound tr?s charmant in French. I share your fondness for fine melodies, and sometimes restate the Exposition in varied form. Section 15-8 of the French technical manual prompted me to translate my original 9/8 meter theme and restate it in 15/8 meter. Pourquoi pas? Thus the Exposition and Development sections overlap. A brief chorale also emerges during the Development. After the Recapitulation, this chorale reappears in the Coda."
