Stickeen is a story by John Muir about his exploration of the Pacific Northwest of America by canoe, with a risky sortie onto a glacier casually undertaken in a storm accompanied only by an off-hand little dog named after a tribe of native Americans, Stickeen. The dog had its own agenda, and did not relate to its human companions in the early part of the trip, but seemed more at home in the storms and ice than any of the men. The dog surpassed itself on the glacier, as retold by John Muir, and subsequently retold by several other authors. Check an Internet search with the name. This piece for bassoon and string septet is another retelling of the story, written for my wife, Judith.
