This is the second of settings of seven sacred sonnets by John Donne called "La Corona" or The Crown. This movement was given its world premier at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in Washington, DC in 1987 by the Paul Hill Chorale. the performance here is by Circle Singers of Washington,DC. www.circlesingers.org

All seven movement are based on one main motive. This movement begins with the head of the motive. An interesting feature of the poetry is that the final line of each poem serves as the beginning of the next.

Mike Cutler recently published a fugue based on the opening theme as it appears in the first sonnet, "Deigne at my hands". You can check out his fugue here: www.sibeliusmusic.com/cgi-bin/show_score.pl?scoreid=40736
