La Corona: I. Deigne at my hands

You are purchasing high quality sheet music PDF files suitable for printing or viewing on digital devices. This is the first movement of seven, based on John Donne's cycle of sacred sonnets: La Corona. The entire cycle is based on the opening two motives, heard in the alto and immediately repeated by the other voices. The poetry is unusual, as the last line of each sonnet becomes the first line of the next. This was written with a professional group of singers in mind. The MP3 attached is a recording of that group Circle Singers, under the direction of Sondra Proctor Goldsmith. www.circlesingers.org
Mike Cutler recently called for fugue themes, and I submitted this opening theme to see, out of curiosity, what another composer would do with the material. Since Mike just published his new work, I decided it was time to get my music here too. The other six sonnets will follow soon.
