As the French national anthem, La Marseillaise (Mar-say-ez) carries the spirit of France as they went to war against Austria in 1792. Originally titled "Chant de guerre pour l'Armée du Rhin (The Battle A", its iconic melody continues to evoke cravings for revolution and rising against one's oppressors. When Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle wrote La Marseillaise, he clearly intended for this song to gain its iconic status. Otherwise, the French would not have chosen this song as their national anthem.
