In the summer of 1888, as Edward Elgar and Alice Roberts moved towards marriage, Alice gave him a poem she had written entitled Love’s Grace. While holidaying with his friend Dr Charles Buck in Settle, Yorkshire, Elgar responded by composing a short and tender musical gift, which he called Liebesgruss—Love’s Greeting.
Elgar dedicated the work “To Carice”, a name formed from Alice’s forenames, Caroline Alice. After returning from Settle, he presented the piece to Alice and proposed marriage. They married at the Brompton Oratory in South Kensington in May 1889.
Later in 1888, Elgar submitted versions for solo piano, violin and piano, and orchestra to the publisher Schott, which purchased the work for two guineas. Sales were initially modest, but after the title was changed to the more internationally appealing Salut d’Amour, the piece rapidly gained popularity.
Far more than a charming Victorian salon miniature, Salut d’Amour reveals the expressive warmth, melodic elegance and craftsmanship that would distinguish Elgar’s later music. Its graceful melody is particularly well suited to the rich and lyrical character of the French horn.
This attractive transcription for French horn and pianoforte is ideal for recitals, weddings, examinations, concerts and other special occasions. A timeless favourite and a delightful addition to the repertoire.
