Symphony #2 “Foundations”

Movement III "Elegy and Cortege" is dedicated to a good friend of the HFSO and composer, Bill Boehm, who passed away this year. Bill was also a big help to others through his contributions to the Hamilton Community Foundation. The main tune is an expanded version of the Idee Fixe, sounding first in the viola, which mirror’s Bill’s tenor voice. The Elegy is solemn and thoughtful, while the Cortege employs he requisite muffled drum sound, ushering the deceased to his place of rest. The climax is sounded in the upward movement of the trumpet, accompanied by the strings in high tremolo, immitating the beating of Angel’s wings, perhaps. Following the climax, a distant bugle is heard playing taps one final time, before the movement concludes. The English horn is heard, mirroring what the violas started, but much more serenely. All is accomplished, at last.
