Although it's technically not a sea shanty, Wellerman was still a popular tune for many a seafarer during the 1860s. This song is about a group of whalers having a particularly difficult time killing a whale. harvesting its blubber, and rendering that blubber down into oil. The rendering process was called "tonguing" and it was a long, exhausting, and smelly task. No wonder the wellermen wanted to take their leave and go!
As a notoriously catchy tune, Wellerman took TikTok by storm in 2020 and now it is available for flute quartet. This easy crowd pleaser will wow audiences no matter the skill level of the flutists playing it.
