This is an arrangement for string quartet of Jacques Offenbach's (1819-1880) famous "Barcarolle", the 15th musical number of the Third Act of his last opera, Les contes d'Hoffmann ("The Tales of Hoffmann"). In this arrangement, the viola part assumes most of the melodic material originally assigned to a vocal duet in Offenbach's piece, with optional double stopping to enrich the harmonic moment of the melody. And while the first violin also embodies the main melody in the second part of the piece, the second violin and the cello parts are mostly committed to imitate the original harp accompaniment.
Overall, the aim of this arrangement is to have an enjoyable piece not too difficult to play with a small classical ensemble, and to allow this beautiful and memorable melody to be relished in special occasions, as well as in regular chamber recitals.
